It would probably not surprise you to learn that I am generally not a fan of Pop music. I don’t mean “popular” music or even music that is broadly considered to be pop, I mean Pop. As in autotune-heavy, synth-backed, played-like-crazy-in-the-bars-I-never-go-to Pop. Girls with trust funds like it Pop. Justin Timberlake wants to make sex to it Pop.
You know. Pop.
I’m not trying to be a snob here, but I genuinely prefer public radio to everything else. I prefer to listen to a few hours of stuff I’ve never heard before than suffer through one whole Miley Cyrus song on whatever godawful station Clear Channel is raping this week. Again, I’m not trying to act superior with my tastes, it’s just what my brain prefers.
With that said, I do occasionally surprise myself. Sleigh Bells is a good example. Now, I’m not sure if Sleigh Bells is Pop because I don’t listen to regular radio so I don’t know if they play it. I’m guessing it’s not, at least not yet, but it could be. Sort of. If the aforementioned trust fund babies in pretentious bars decide to go apeshit over feedback someday, I guess it could be. But for now I am kind of obsessed with Sleigh Bells’ record Treats. It’s like the best rave I’ve ever been to because the people there are totally into Eddie Van Halen. Songs like:
Tell ‘Em – 80s guitars and LASER GUNS, you guys!!!!!
Riot Rhythm – If we’re not careful, some shitty cheerleading movie is going to use this song and then we’ll all be sorry.
Infinity Guitars – This is my new favorite FU Morning song.* (embedding of only decent video in existence disabled by request…dammit.)
Crown On The Ground – Like MIA for people who don’t necessarily hate redheads. Also for people who really liked MIA once and then realized via Twitter that she can’t write a coherent sentence.
A/B Machines – Are they saying “got my A machines on the table, got my B machines in the drawer?” Is that like…turntables and dildos? If so, I nominate this song to replace Peaches’ “Fuck The Pain Away” as the song I hear in every lesbian bar ever.
Treats – Dudes, it’s like Ozzy tripped acid with choirgirls and played Nintendo all night. Yeah. That awesome.
* Other recent FU Morning songs include:
Hey Man (Now You’re Really Living) – Eels
If You’re Wondering If I Want You To (I Want You To) – Weezer
Road To Joy – Bright Eyes
Carpetbaggers – Jenny Lewis
Dylan’s Hard Rain – Ryan Bingham
Because I’m Awesome – The Dollyrots
Oasis – Amanda Palmer
Feeling Good – Nina Simone
Girl Anachronism – Dresden Dolls
Kiss With A Fist – Florence + The Machine
At Least I’m Not As Sad (As I Used To Be) – Fun.
Out Of The Blue – Julian Casablancas
Geeking – Spinnerette
