Went to the farmer’s market yesterday for the first time in…uh…an embarrassingly long time. My office job schedule has changed due to other people’s bitching, which means I can’t get off at 4:30 on Fridays, which means I can’t work at the bar on Friday nights. Which sucks for money but works beautifully for waking up before noon on Saturdays.
St. Louis in the fall is the best. No doubt. There’s the weather and the hoodies and the no paying for A/C or heat, but also the farmer’s market isn’t crowded with tourists and other jamokes who stroll around with no agenda. During fall, I can go to the market and get my grocery shopping done without trying to slap somebody else’s unruly kid .
The food nerd in me loves seeing how the market selection changes with the seasons. The tomatoes and berries from summer are mostly gone, replaced by pears, apples, pumpkins, and everything pickled. There are more peppers now, and everyone’s trying to get rid of the bumper crops of zucchini that apparently went wild around the Midwest. God, how exciting is produce?
I picked up enough to make a smoky lentil and andouille soup today (even though I’m eating pot roast at my friend Shannon’s – price of admission is one iced tea). Of course, I’ll be making it after I make the chocolate chip pumpkin bread. I wanted to make pear muffins out of the Asian pears I found, but then I realized that I don’t own a muffin tin and shit, when am I going to have time?
I cook so much more in the fall, too. I don’t have to worry about heating up my kitchen or picking foods that people will want to eat when it’s subtropical out. It’s very homemaker-y, even though the only person who calls this a home is me.
Also, thanks to Jen for reminding me about these people. They’re idiots.

(Did that video post? If not, sorry? I’m still trying to get the hang of this British blog service.)
* But I’m still working on Tuesday and Saturday nights in case anyone wants to come have drinks with me. I thoroughly enjoy your company as long as you:
A) Tip (nobody likes a cheapskate)
B) Talk (I have very good customers that I’m sick of seeing simply because they don’t understand that one-sided conversations are inconvenient for me)
C) Bring friends (this is optional but certainly appreciated)
